FUNCTION & SCOPE

The Research Foundation for The State University of New York is seeking a mature individual who has an agile mindset and can-do attitude to work with the Industry and External Affairs (I&E) team. The student will gain valuable insights into the Research Foundation's operations, specifically as related to the commercialization of university research, the creation of startup companies, and the administration of programs to catalyze innovation in an academic environment. I&E is the nexus of RF technology transfer activity across the SUNY research enterprise. I&E is searching for an ambitious, creative, and agile student to support getting SUNY technologies to market. Reporting to the Partnership Manager, the Intern will:

DUTIES:

  • Evaluate the marketability and protectability of new technologies submitted by SUNY faculty, staff, and students by conducting in-depth research using the tools found in RF's Technology Transfer Transactions Toolbox (i.e. ZoomInfo, InnovationQ, Frost & Sullivan);
  • Support the discovery and disclosure of new innovation developed by faculty, staff, and students by making I&Ps webpages more user-friendly and marketing the technology transfer services offered by I&P using a number of tools such as educational videos, marketing materials, communication tools such as Informz, and Facebook and Twitter content;
  • Assist in the customer discovery process for new innovations by researching potential partners and customers, conducting interviews, developing business models, and drafting business plans or technology commercialization plans;
  • Support connecting commercialization partners to SUNY innovations by assisting with entrepreneur recruitment and coordination of events or mixers to encourage collaboration and team building and working collaboratively to identify and develop tools and educational materials that support entrepreneurship and technology development across the enterprise; and
  • Support the 64 SUNY campuses in their efforts to successfully engage with the START-UP NY program including:
  • Development of campus plan documents including plan amendments and narratives, floor plans and maps, Excel property files, and accurate space quantification; and participation in team meetings to review and recommend approval;
  • Data collection, quantification, and reporting of key program metrics which includes working with campus liaisons to capture, aggregate and report on academic benefit program metrics and creating visual depictions of summary data; and
  • Success stories and program marketing which includes gathering background information, interviewing campus and company reps to develop case studies and success stories; and
  • Support the innovation analytics function of the office by assisting with requests for data, metrics, and reporting relating to SUNY's innovation portfolio and technology transfer performance.


Requirements:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program. Students from the State University of New York colleges and universities are preferred. Good organization skills, an ability to work independently and excellent communication skills are required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required.
